Green Foxy in the Saxnäs mountains Autumn 1978

Me, Green Foxy in the Saxnäs mountains. 1978.

Autumn 1978 we went to the Saxnäs mountains. Ove had a newer car now. It was a SAAB 95.

First we passed a place named Torvsjö. There is a water mill museum. Ove is looking in a house and you don't see his head.
Me by the Torvsjö mills.
This is a kind of waterfall name the staircase Waterfall. It's in a river near the town Vilhelmina. It's always fun to pass this place.
We had a room in this house named Kultsjögården.

Kultsjö is the lake beside this house.  The word gård is farmer house or manor house.

You could rent a room. But there was no breakfast and food. There was a big kitchen if you wanted to cook a simple meal or eat you own breakfast. If you wanted to eat dinner you could get it at the restaurant in the hotel that near the house

We had our breakfast in the kitchen of the house and had dinner in the restaurant of the hotel.

The next day Ove drove up through the woodlands. And he parked the car on the top.
From here we started our walk in the mountains.
We were there at September 10. And then it was already real autumn there.
Unfortunately the weather was not good. But as we travelled  long way we did not want to cancel the walking.
Ove put on his rain suit and put a rain cover on his backpack.
I did the same. Here I'm standing in my rain suit.
A little break.
Despite of the rain the autumn colours were gorgeous. In red, yellow, orange and green.
We use to say: The mountains are "burning" in colours.
These are old scanned pictures. In real it looked much better. But if it had been sunny the colours should have been brighter.
Oops! The rain made a "lake" in the middle of the walking route. We had to walk around this.
The big yellow patch on the picture is swampy ground. You cannot walk there. But the route was beside it. The pole with a cross are the marks for the walking route. (long-distance footpath)
More colours.
Ove on the walking path.
We came to a cottage. But it was locked. It was private property. and not a cottage for hikers. Only the door to the little hall was not locked because there was a help telephone in case you were in need.
We put up our tent some got shelter for the wind from the cottage. And we used the veranda for cooking and shelter for the rain.
It was good to have this veranda. And behind the house was an outside lavatory. And we used it. That was also good. Here I'm standing eating bread. It was too cold to sit.
Dry food that you boil in water. The food looked like pea soup. But it was a chicken pot with macaroni. All the food looked like that. We had a lot of fun about this. Believe it or not. It tasted delicious! You are always hungry while hiking in the mountains.
The colours of the plants were beautiful.
There were heavy clouds over the mountains and the pictures got lack of contrast
.
Me looking around near the cottage. It stopped raining for a while.
It was getting dark but we had lamps with us. Ove tried to light a fire so we could grill hot dogs. It was raining again and it was impossible to get a fire.
We had a little lamp hanging on the veranda too. We did warm the hot dogs on the spirit stove instead.
A view from the dry toilet (The outhouse)
I was sitting on the toilet with the door open enjoying the view. Here were no people. We did not see any human under our walk. And in autumn there are not many people walking here.
We saw birds of prey flying over and saw also saw ptarmigan. And heard their sound.
The next day there were more red colours.
We enjoyed the colours.
Gorgeous!
We had a little radio with us and heard the weather reports. They predicted storm and more bad weather in the mountains.
We decided to walk back to the village. It can be dangerous to be on the higher mountains there you can get snowstorm even this time of the year.
Still no snowstorm, only rain.
More nice colours.
Ove was looking at the map. But we could not loose the way. Because the route went straight to the valley.
It stopped raining and I could open my rain suite. I had my Fjällräven jacket under the rain suit.
In real this was gorgeous.
We human are very little in the mountains. Do you see the little orange spot in the distance. That's Ove's with his backpack
We walked into a cloud.
Me taking a little break.
Ove was repairing a signpost. It's important they are there so others will not loose the way.
More colours.
Me standing by a signpost
Ove had to go around these big puddles
Fortunately we did not need to climb on this top. The route was beside it.
The valley in the distance.
Another signpole.
We arrived on the little parking lot. You can walk 17 kilometres to the mountain Borgafjäll. But we were happy we did not do this. There came snow and storm that night. But then we were in the house in our room.
Ove put the backpack in the car and put off his rain suit.
I put of my rain suit too. But still had my rain hat on.
This lake is called Kultsjö
When we came back to the house the landlord came to us and she said. "Wilhelmina you are in the newspaper". Ove had sent this picture of me in the Ammarnäs mountains to the paper and they published it. This was real fun. We bought that newspaper later when we came home.
The view from our room.
The view from our room.
The lake Kultsjö.
The next day the weather was better. We decided to make a road trip in the mountains.
The lake Kultsjö.
Kultsjö
There is a road that goes high over in the mountains named Vildmarksvägen The wilderness road. People call this road for Stekenjokkvägen but I saw on the Internet that the real name is Vildmarksvägen  = The wilderness road.
The road was build because there was a copper mine before and then they needed a road. Now it is a beautiful road for tourists I took these pictures of the road in autumn 1978.
You can only use this road between the end of may and the middle of October because the snow drifts in winter.
Me in the mountains. But it was beside the road.
Another view of me beside the Stekenjokk road.
Ove in the mountains beside the road.
This was gorgeous.
Ove by his car. A SAAB 95.
This was a gorgeous place. But a cold wind was blowing. I was glad to have my windproof jacket.
Ove did not drive the whole road.  Only a bit. We made a lot of stops and enjoyed nature.
Here it look like Ove's car is standing in the wilderness.
Here I was in the shadow of a cloud.
Now the could is gone.
I remember from the map that Ove had that this mountain is called Sippmegefjället. Unfortunately I could not find anything on the net about this mountain.
Me between the polar cotton grass.(Eriophorum scheuchzeri)

Me by the warning sign for reindeer.

A  signpost to a lake named Roukasjö. That is a 25 kilometres walk on a long-distance footpath.
.
.
Ove drove to this place.
There we could see how they dig sort out reindeer herds. The reindeer have marks and the Sami sort out the reindeer with their own mark.
This was so interesting.
Me by the enclosed place for the reindeer. I felt so happy to see these reindeer. This was exciting.
More reindeer.
A black and white picture of the reindeer.
The low sunlight in the evening made the landscape gorgeous.
We lived on night in this hotel. My by the Danish flag. This picture is taken in 1978. I forgot to write down the name if this hotel. It probably is rebuild and bigger if it still is there.
The backside of the hotel. This was such a peaceful place.
The front of the hotel.
I view over the lake from our hotel room.
The road by the hotel.
The next day we got some wet snow. Fortunately it did not stick on the ground. But the tops of the mountains now had real snow.
